Love 'em or Hate 'em, we all remember them.
They were the bane of our young lives and you dreaded the possibility that their Eagle Eye would settle on you, but with the hindsight of nearly 50 years, we now realise that the discipline they instilled in us has stood us in good stead over the years.
I've quoted this elsewhere, but it
applies to these gentlemen
(that's not what we used to call them)
"Gradually, with the gentle encouragement of our Drill instructors (and what they would do with their Pace Sticks) .....we learned.......... "
Kipling expressed it best ......
" but day by day they kicks 'im, which 'elps 'im on a bit,
till 'e finds 'isself one mornin', with a full and proper kit,
Gettin' clear o' dirtiness, gettin' done with mess,
Gettin' shut of doin' things, rather-more-or-less."
"Gentlemen, we salute you"
